Register for exams this June. You can register at B1, B2 and C1 levels for Cambridge exams here at Inishouse!
We are all experts with mobiles. We use them all the time to chat, to play, to share photos! But how good are we when it comes to using them to learn? Turns out we could be better. Here are some tips to get the most out of your online learning:
FocusIf you are attending a video conference class, you should not be multitasking. In a classroom you would not be sending whatsapps or doing other homework while the teacher is giving class. It is very obvious when someone is or is not paying attention in a video conference class. People who are really paying attention answer questions quickly, they don't need to be asked three times. And people who are not listening make the session very tedious for everyone else. So if you log in, attend. If you can pay 100% attention, join the session. If not, please don’t disrupt the class by signing in but being absent..
Turn your video camera onIt helps the class. Facial expression is a very important part of communication. It makes it more enjoyable for everyone.
Use the PossibilitiesOnline learning can actually be as, if not more effective than in-classroom learning. Your teacher will ask for recordings and uploads every week via whatsapp, these are 'homework' and can take just a few minutes to do. You will really be progressing with your speaking if you take advantage of this part of the course. That is why you are here. Your teacher will set self-correcting exercises via links on the platform, compositions via e-mail. This is how you will progress. Compositions carry 25% of the grade in any exam and you need to practise them. Not using the possibilities is a little like going to the beach and not going for a swim. Your parents are paying for access to a beautiful pool. Jump! in!
ParentsThe whatsapp groups are for the students BUT we suggest parents follow a little too, just so you are aware in a general way of what students should be doing. And no harm to pop into the room around video conference time occasionally so you can see if people are fully participating. A video conference class is highly interactive. It is not supposed to be like a radio for half-listening to, students need to be at their computers and doing nothing else. In the classroom, the teacher ensures this in the case but at home you may need to help it along! There may also be notifications of COVID issues on the whatsapp group, eg; next class online because of a confinement order.
